Idaho Archery Elk Season: Bowhunt Bull Elk in the Selway-Bitterroot Backcountry

Idaho archery elk season is the ultimate bowhunting experience for serious elk hunters. When September arrives and bull elk begin bugling across the high country, there is no more thrilling pursuit in North American hunting. Granite Peak Outfitters offers fully guided archery elk hunts in the heart of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, where low hunting pressure and vast roadless terrain produce exceptional opportunities for mature bulls.

Why Idaho Archery Elk Season Is World-Class

Idaho’s general archery elk season runs from late August through late September, coinciding perfectly with the peak of the elk rut. During this period, mature bulls are actively bugling, raking trees, and gathering harems of cows—making them responsive to calling and more vulnerable to a well-planned stalk than at any other time of year. The combination of rutting activity and Idaho’s generous over-the-counter archery tag structure makes this one of the best elk bowhunting opportunities in the West.

The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is over 1.3 million acres of roadless, motorless country. This means less hunting pressure, more mature bulls, and a backcountry experience that is becoming increasingly rare in western elk hunting. Our hunting units hold strong resident elk herds, and the steep, timbered terrain of the Selway drainage provides ideal elk habitat with abundant feed, water, and thermal cover. Hunters who are willing to go deep into the backcountry are rewarded with the kind of elk hunting that most people only read about.

How We Hunt Archery Elk at Granite Peak

Our archery elk hunts are conducted from established backcountry camps that we access by horseback. Hunts are typically 7 days in length, giving you a full week to work bulls during the rut. Each day begins early, listening for bugles in the dark timber and along ridge tops. When a bull is located, we move in using cow calls and challenge bugles to close the distance to bow range.

Calling in a rutting bull elk to 30 yards through the timber is one of hunting’s greatest thrills, and our guides are experienced callers who know how to read a bull’s mood and adjust their calling strategy. We also employ spot-and-stalk tactics on meadow edges and wallows during midday when thermals are favorable. Archery elk hunting in the Selway demands physical fitness and patience, but the payoff—a screaming bull at close range in true wilderness—is worth every ounce of effort.

Prepare for Your Archery Elk Hunt

Successful archery elk hunting in the Idaho backcountry requires preparation. We recommend hunters be comfortable shooting their bow at distances out to 40 yards and be in good physical condition for hiking in steep, mountainous terrain at elevations between 5,000 and 8,000 feet. Our guides will work with you before your hunt to discuss gear, shot placement, and what to expect in camp. We provide horses for transportation to and from camp, comfortable wall tents, and hearty meals to fuel your hunt.
