Idaho Spring Bear Hunting: Chase Black Bears in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness

Spring bear hunting in Idaho is one of the most exciting and accessible big game seasons in the West. As snow melts and bears emerge from their dens, hunters have the opportunity to pursue black bears across open meadows, burned timber, and south-facing slopes where fresh green vegetation draws hungry bruins into the open. Granite Peak Outfitters guides spring bear hunts deep in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness—some of the most productive black bear habitat in North America.

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Hunt Bears in Idaho

Idaho’s spring bear season typically runs from April through June, with peak hunting conditions in May and early June. After months of hibernation, black bears are driven by an intense need to feed, making them more active and visible during daylight hours than at any other time of year. Fresh green grass on south-facing avalanche chutes and burned hillsides acts like a magnet, pulling bears into open areas where they can be spotted and stalked from a distance.

Spring hunts also offer the advantage of longer days, comfortable temperatures, and bears with thick, richly colored hides that are in prime condition after winter. The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness holds an exceptionally healthy black bear population, and our hunting units consistently produce bears in the 250 to 350-pound range, with color phases ranging from jet black to chocolate, cinnamon, and blonde.

How We Hunt Spring Bears at Granite Peak

Our spring bear hunts are spot-and-stalk style, conducted from backcountry camps accessible by horseback. Each morning and evening, we glass south-facing slopes, avalanche chutes, and meadow edges for feeding bears. When a good boar is located, we plan a stalk based on wind direction and terrain to close the distance for an ethical shot. This is active, physical hunting in big country—and it is incredibly rewarding.

Hunters should be prepared for variable spring weather in the mountains, including rain, snow, and rapidly changing conditions. We provide comfortable wall tent camps with hot meals, experienced pack strings, and knowledgeable guides who have been hunting this country for decades. Our typical spring bear hunt runs 5 to 7 days, giving you ample time to be selective and find the bear you want.

Spring Bear Hunting Tags and Regulations

Idaho spring black bear tags are available over the counter for both residents and nonresidents, making this one of the easiest big game hunts to plan. No controlled hunt draw is required for our hunting units. Nonresident black bear tags are affordable compared to other western big game tags, and Idaho allows the harvest of one black bear per calendar year in most units. We recommend booking your spring bear hunt early, as our camp dates fill quickly and the best weeks in May and June are always in high demand.
