Frequently Asked Questions About Hunting With Granite Peak Outfitters

What types of guided hunts do you offer in Idaho?

Granite Peak Outfitters offers guided hunts for elk (archery and rifle), black bear (over bait and with hounds), mountain lion (with hounds), mule deer, whitetail deer, Shiras moose, and wolf. All of our hunts take place in Idaho’s Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and surrounding backcountry, some of the most productive big game habitat in the western United States.

Where is your hunting area located?

Our primary hunting territory is in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and surrounding National Forest lands in central Idaho. This is remote backcountry accessible by horseback, and it offers some of the lowest hunting pressure and highest game densities in the state. Our base of operations is in Post Falls, Idaho, and we transport hunters to our backcountry camps.

What is included in the price of a guided hunt?

Our guided hunt packages include professional guide services, horses and pack stock for transportation, backcountry camp accommodations (wall tents with wood stoves), all meals while in camp, and field preparation of your harvest. Prices do not include Idaho hunting licenses, tags, or taxidermy services. We recommend purchasing licenses and tags directly through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG).

Do I need to be in good physical shape for a backcountry hunt?

While our horses handle much of the transportation, Idaho backcountry hunting can be physically demanding. We recommend being in reasonable physical condition, as you may need to hike at elevation, navigate uneven terrain, and help with camp duties. That said, we accommodate hunters of varying fitness levels and will work with you to plan a hunt that matches your abilities.

How do I get an Idaho hunting license and tags?

Idaho hunting licenses and tags are available through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG). Most of our hunt species have over-the-counter tags available for both residents and non-residents, including elk, bear, wolf, and mountain lion. Moose tags require a lottery draw. We assist all of our clients with understanding the tag application process and current regulations.

What is the best time of year to hunt in Idaho?

Hunting seasons in Idaho vary by species. Archery elk season typically runs September through mid-October, with rifle elk season in October. Bear hunts are available spring and fall. Mountain lion season runs through winter. Wolf hunting is available nearly year-round. We help each client choose the optimal timing based on their target species and preferred hunting method.

What should I bring on a guided backcountry hunt?

We provide a detailed packing list to all booked hunters. Essential items include your hunting rifle or bow, appropriate ammunition, quality hunting boots, layered clothing for variable mountain weather, a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures, and personal items. We provide all camp gear, cooking equipment, horses, and food.

What is your hunter success rate?

Our success rates vary by species and season, but we consistently maintain above-average harvest rates compared to state averages for our hunting units. Our guides’ intimate knowledge of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, combined with low hunting pressure in our area, gives our clients a significant advantage. We are happy to discuss specific success rates for your target species when you contact us.

Do you offer outdoor adventures besides hunting?

Yes! Granite Peak Outfitters offers a variety of Idaho outdoor adventures including guided snowmobile tours, horseback riding, ATV and side-by-side excursions along the historic Lewis and Clark Trail, scenic hiking trips, and backcountry fishing. These adventures are perfect for non-hunting family members or anyone looking to experience Idaho’s wilderness.
